Disney Park Photography 101: Rule of Thirds

In this first post we are going to talk about The "rule of thirds". There is no right and wrong composition in photography. A photograph communicates a messaging.

The "rule of thirds" is when you divide the image into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines. The "rule of thirds" is applied by aligning a subject with the guide lines and their points of intersection.

Depth-of-field or DOF is the distance between the nearest and farthest subject in your photo that appears acceptably sharp in your photo. Now that we got the "technical definition" out of the way in plain english that means what is sharp. A shallow depth-of-field is when your subject is in focus and everything else is out of focus.

ISO refers to your cameras film speed, in traditional film cameras it would refer to the film sensitivity to light. You should be shooting at the highest resolution your camera shoots at. But at times, a smaller images might be all you need or have space for on your memory card. A smaller resolution will let you fit more images on your memory card and if you need a faster shooting rate it avoides delays and the camera buffering to take the next shot.

RAW is almost always perfered way to go because of its increasd bit depth. it keeps all the infomation uncompressed so if it is under or over exposed you will be able to save it in your developing workflow. Since it keeps all the infomation and is uncompressed the down side is that the files are larger and tale longer for the camera to write it to your media card. You will need to process them before you are able to print them.
